The Realschule may be a step below the Gymnasium (more below), but it can be a very good school, with academic standards that usually exceed those of a typical high school in the US. For instance, Realschule students must study at least one foreign language (usually English or French) for a minimum of five years.
Besides the classes, the way students behave and act in the classroom are also very different to High School. Swearing here is taken very lightly, and usually heard frequently even inside the class room. So, the original idea was something like, the soon-to-be brick layer visits the Hauptschule, the soon-to-be office clerk visits the Realschule and the soon-to-be academic visits the Gymnasium. But of course such a strict division is far from adequate.
